Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) is conducted by UPSC every year for the recruitment of Officers in Indian Armed Forces including Army, Indian Airforce and Indian Navy. In This Article

CDS examination as conducted by UPSC 2 times a year in th e month of February and September to fill the Vacancies in CDS, CDS 1 2019 and CDS 2 2019 is a two phase examination.

Phase 1 of CDS is the Written Examination and Phase Two is the SSB Interview where aspirants are tested for Officer Like Qualities that are essential for a to-be officer.

There is a Stage 3 also, where Candidates are tested Medically but that is totally in the hands of the doctors.

After qualifying in Stage 3, the candidates are sent for a challenging Training at IMA, IAFA or INA for 1.5 years and after that the gentlemen cadets join the respected arms to serve as Officers in Indian Defence Forces.

Note: The candidates applying for the examination should ensure that they fulfil all the eligibility conditions for admission to the Examination. Their admission at all the stages of the examination will be purely provisional subject to satisfying the prescribed eligibility conditions.

CDS 1 2019 and CDS 2 2019 Exam Dates

CDS 1 2019 and CDS 2 2019 Application Process

All Applications of CDS 1 2019 and CDS 2 2019 must be submitted in Online Format Only. No other mode of Application is entertained.

Before Applying for CDS 1/ CDS 2 2019 Online form, one must go through all the following important details of the CDS Application Form 2019. Candidates must be aware of the mode of application, How to Apply for CDS Exam Fee 2019 and Details of Exam Fee etc.

CDS 1 and CDS 2 2019 Online Application

The Online Applications of CDS 2 2019 (Part I and II) can be filled from 12th June, 2019 to 8th July, 2019.

STEPS- How to Fill CDS 1/2 2019 Application Form 2019

Application for CDS must be done online on UPSC official website.

  1. Go to UPSC Website.
  3. Application form of CDS comprises of Two Parts: Part I and Part II
  4. In Part 1, Candidates have to fill there general details like Education and Personal Details
  5. In Part 2 of Application Form, Candidates have to pay the Online Application Fee and have to upload scanned picture and signature.
  6. There is no correction feature in the Online Application, hence candidates have to ensure and fill each detail very carefully.
  7. Candidates can take Print Out of Application for future use.(No need to send it to UPSC)
  8. Candidates must provide correct and working E-mail identity while filling the form.

Note: Do not submit multiple applications as this may result in rejection of Application form.

CDS 2019 Exam Fee Details

The Exam Fee for CDSE Application 2019 is Rs. 200 (Rupees One Hundred) per application.

To Pay Online: The exam fee must be submitted through Online Mode (Internet banking, Visa/MasterCard/Rupay Credit/Debit Card) or by depositing cash in any SBI Branch by cash.

To Pay By Cash: Candidates opting for Pay by Cash should generate the Challan form from PART 2 Registration of the Online Application.

Candidates belonging to the below mentioned category need not to pay CDS Application Fees

  1. Female Candidates
  2. Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes

CDS Exam 2019 Photo and Signature Details

Before Appling for CDS 2019, Candidates are required to have scanned copies of Photograph and Signature. The size of Photograph must be from 3 KB to 40KB and the signature must be in black ink with size 1KB to 40KB.

CDS 2019 Eligibility Criteria

The aspirants looking forward to join the National Defence Forces must be aware of the CDS Eligibility Criteria. Below is the brief eligibility criteria of the CDS Exam 2019.

  1. Nationality

  4. Educational Qualification
  5. Physical Standards


Only Unmarried Males are required to fill the CDS Application. Candidates with the following nationalities only can fill the CDS 2019 Application Form:

  1.  a citizen of India, or
  2. a subject of Bhutan, or
  3. a subject of Nepal, or
  4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

CDS 2019 Age Limit

  • For IMA- Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2001 only are eligible.
  • For Indian Naval Academy- Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2001 only are eligible.
  • For Air Force Academy- 20 to 24 years as on 1st January, 2020 i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2000 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 yrs. i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1994 and not later than 1st January, 2000) only are eligible.
  • For Officers’ Training Academy- (For men) unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2001 only are eligible.
  • For Officers’ Training Academy (for Women):They should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2001.

Gender and Marital Status

  • Candidate must be a Male and Unmarried.
  • Candidate must not marry until the completion of Training Period.
  • Note: Women Candidates are eligible for OTA only provided they are unmarried.

Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for CDS 2019 must check their educational qualification to be able to appear for CDS written test. Candidates who are under graduates are not eligible to fill CDS Application Form.

  1. For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA)- Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.
  2. For Indian Naval Academy- Degree in Engineering from a recognised University/Institution.
  3. For Air Force Academy- Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.
  4. {Important} Candidates who are studying in the final year/semester Degree course can also apply provided candidate should not have any present backlog upto the last semester / year .    They will be required to submit proof of passing the degree examination at the time of commencement of course.

NOTE : Those candidates who have failed CPSS/PABT earlier are not eligible for Air Force Fyling Branch.

Physical Standards

All the candidates applying for CDS 2019 must be physically fit in accordance with Indian Defence Forces Medical Criteria.

Combined Defence Services Written Examination 2019 Exam Pattern comprises of:

  1. For Indian Military Academy, Indian Arirforce, Indian Naval Academy-

  • Mathematics– The Mathematics Syllabus of CDS 2019 has questions Arithmetic, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration and Statistics.
  • General Knowledge: The General Ability Test of CDS consists of questions of History, Geography, Current Affairs and Defence News. The Level of GK is normal as expected from a concerned and educated person in a society.
  • English: The question paper will be designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.

Negative Marking- CDS exam has a negative marking of one-third(1/3). For example, a question of 3 marks is attempted wrong, then a penalty of -1 is added. Therefore, we recommend the candidates to attempt only the question which you are sure about. Don’t attempt any question just on guess.

  • The Mode of Examination will be Offline.
  • To fill the OMR sheet, only Black Ball Pen must be used.
  • The Exam will be Bilingual (Hindi and English).
  • Used of Mobile Phones and Digital Gadgets is banned.
  • No Travel Allowance will be paid for Written Examination.

The Written Examintation of CDS is followed by an Intelligence and Personality Test (SSB). Candidates who qualify for the respected branches, namely Army, Navy and Airforce, are called by the Service Selection Board at their respective SSB Interview Centres in India.

The candidates qualifying both these exams are sent for SSB Medicals at the respected Military Hospitals.

CDS 2019 E-Admit Card

After applying for the CDS 2019 Application Online, admit card is generated in the digital form and Candidates can Download CDS Admit card 2019 on the official Website 3 weeks prior the Written Examination.

Note: For downloading the CDS e-Admit Card, the candidate must have his login information like RID & Date of Birth or Roll No. (if received) & date of birth or name, father’s name & Date of Birth available with him.

      you can join Indian Army. If you are 12th pass, you can apply for NDA Exam and if you are a graduate, you can apply for CDS Exam.
