How To Join Indian Army: Joining & Selection Process

The Joining process of Indian Army starts from an early age of 16.5 years and for the candidates who pass at least 8th class. The candidates with this qualification can join Indian Army as Tradesmen.

Then, the posts change differently according to the Qualification of the candidates and the age limit. Candidates can Join Indian Army after Class 10th or Class 12th or Graduation. And there are vacancies for Post Graduates also.

How to Join Indian Army as a Soldier?

The first level where you can join Indian Army is as a Soldier. Soldiers are the front-end of the defence forces and are the ultimate power of the great Force. Without soldiers, the Indian Army cannot stand. The work force of Indian Army i.e. its soldiers carry out every work in the Indian army.

The work ranges from combat (mainstream fighting) to building and from management to cooking food. Not just this the soldiers are called for rescue operations as and when there is a natural or artificial calamity in the country or outside the country. From fighting terrorists on the borders to saving people in the flood hit areas, the Indian Army Soldiers has a very delicate role to play.

Depending on your abilities and qualification, you can join Indian Army as a soldier and perform the duties allotted to you.

The procedure to become a Soldier in Indian Army is straight forward. You just need the essential qualification and age to join Indian Army as a Soldier. Depending on the qualification you possess, there are different posts in Indian Army for Soldier Candidates. These include Soldier Tradesmen, Soldier Clerk, Soldier GD, Technical, Religious Teacher etc.

Indian Army Recruitment Centre organizes Army Soldier Bharti Rally in every state and Union Territories of India from time to time. Candidates who want to Apply for Indian Army Bharti Rally Recruitment need to Apply Online for these rallies. The Bharti Rally tests candidates for the basic qualities in a candidate and select most worthy candidates to join the forces.

To get selected as a soldier in Indian Army, you have to go through a 3 step Selection Process. The Selection Process in Indian Army Bharti Rally includes a Physical Test, a Written Examination and a Medical Examination.

The Indian Army Bharti Rally Programme requires eligible candidates to appear in the Bharti Rally. Here the young aspirants go through a Physical Measurement and Fitness Test for Indian Army Recruitment.

The candidates who clear all the Tests are then sent for Indian Army Soldier Training. The time period of Training of Indian Army Soldiers is around 6 months (Basic Training Period) which changes according to the post and the learning ability of the newly recruited soldier.

The Physical Selection Process for all the post of Soldiers mentioned above is nearly same. Although their can be minor changes in the height, weight and other criteria but overall the Eligibility Criteria for Bharti remains almost same.

The Written Examination, however, vary according to the post you have applied for. There are minor changes in the syllabus of different posts. Such as in Nursing Assistant the focus in on the Biology section and in Technical Bharti the questions from Mathematics are asked.

The Medical Examination of the Soldier GD candidates remains the same and the minimum required qualification must be reached to qualify in the Indian Army Medical Examination. Only Medically fit candidates are considered for the final cut-off and result.

Another level where you can join Indian Army is as an Officer. Dedicated to their motherland, Officers in Indian Army are the leaders that are responsible for their respective platoons and soldiers working under them.

Indian Army Officer is a very reputed job and the officers selected in this are Class II gazetted officers. Main work of Officers in Indian Army is to lead their troops on missions and train armies for combat roles.

The Selection Process of Officers in Indian Army is done through a written Examination (except for Direct entries). After which an Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview is organized at the listed SSB Centres and then a medical Test is organised for the candidates selected in the previous stage.

Note: Direct Entries are the attempts where candidates with certain qualifications are directly called for SSB Interview as they are exempted from the Written Exam Process.

The Written Examination for recruitment of Officers in Indian Army is conducted by UPSC at two levels. National Defence Academy (NDA) Exam is for the candidates who pass or appeared in the 10+2 or Intermediate. Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam is for the Graduate and Under-Graduate Candidates. The candidates who clear these Examinations are then called for a 5-day Interview at Army SSB Centres.

The 5-Day SSB Interview is organized by Indian Army where the candidates are tested for different Officer-like-qualities. The Interview is divided into 2 rounds- Screening and Conference. Candidates who clear both these rounds are recommended for Medicals in the respective Army Hospitals.

When you appear for exams to be an Officer in Indian Army and clears all the Stages of the exam. You are then subjected to a Training at your respective academies.

The Time Period of Training of Officers varies. If you join through NDA, the time period of training of NDA is 4 years (3 years NDA + 1-year IMA). When you join through CDS, the training period is around 9 months only.

    1. Yes, You are eligible to appear for Army Soldier Bharti- General Duty provided that you have passed class 10th with atleast 45% marks.
